GRIDLEY, CA (MPG) - The Gridley Bulldogs baseball team traveled to San Diego to participate in the four-day Lions Tournament. The tournament started for the Bulldogs on March 31 and ended on April 3.

In their first game on March 31, the Bulldogs started the tournament hot as they dominated the Kearny Komets (San Diego), and the Windward Wildcats (Los Angeles) in back-to-back games. In those two games, the Bulldogs scored a combined 28 runs (13 against Kearny, 15 against Windward).

The great batting and base running lifted the Bulldogs to a 2-0 tournament start after a 13-4 win against the Komets, and a 15-3 win over the Wildcats.

Then on April 1, the Bulldogs faced the Kearny Komets again and were not nearly as successful as the previous day.

The Bulldogs contained the Komets until they took off in the third inning, scoring at least one run in the remaining innings. The Bulldog offense was contained as they only scored three runs (two coming in the 7th inning). That would be the only game the Bulldogs played on April 1.

On April 2, the Bulldogs played a nail-biting game against the Washington Eagles (San Francisco).

The Bulldogs got the bats going early and scored all seven runs in the first two innings (two in the first, five in the second). While also holding Eagles to no runs. That was until the third inning when the Eagles responded with four runs of their own, followed by another in the fourth inning.

The game score would hold at 7-5 Bulldogs until the sixth inning when the Eagles would score yet another run making it 7-6 and setting up a tight seventh inning. Fortunately, the Bulldog defense would hold strong and stop the Eagles comeback. The Bulldogs escaped with a 7-6 victory making them 3-1 in the tournament.

On April 3 (the last day of the tournament) the Bulldogs faced the Palo Verde Valley Yellow Jackets (Blythe).

The Yellow Jackets took a commanding 7-1 lead through four innings leaving the Bulldogs with the tall task of making a comeback. After scoring three runs in the fifth inning, the Bulldogs were unable to keep momentum and didn’t score the rest of the game leading to a 7-4 loss to end the tournament. The Bulldogs now hold a 9-6 overall record on the season.

The Bulldogs will go back on the road on April 8 to face the Las Plumas Thunderbirds. After that, the Bulldogs will face the Thunderbirds again on April 11 at home. Both games are scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
