BIGGS, CA (MPG) - The Biggs Wolverines battled but fell short at home against the Weed Cougars this past Friday, Nov.
The Wolverines season came to an unfortunate end when they faced the Cougars in their first-round playoff game. The Wolverines started the game with the ball and drove into the Cougars territory but on a fourth down attempt to keep their drive alive, they were stopped and turned the ball over on downs. The Wolverine defense took the field and forced a fumble to give the ball right back to their offense.
After moving the ball slowly, the Wolverines fumbled the ball giving the possession back to the Cougars to end the first quarter. The teams would go back and forth fumbling the ball on each of their following possessions until the Wolverines would finally score on their fourth possession when junior quarterback, Skyler Long ran the ball into the end zone. He would do the same on the 2-point conversion attempt and make the score 8-0 with just over six minutes to go in the second quarter.
The Wolverine defense would hold strong the rest of the second quarter as they intercepted passes on three straight Cougar possessions. The offense, unfortunately, would be unable to capitalize on the interceptions with a score, and the first half would end with an 8-0 Wolverine lead.
The Cougars received the ball to start the second half and moved down the field through their passing attack and eventually scored a touchdown on a pass from senior quarterback, Marcus Horton to senior running back, Logan Bowles. The Cougars would convert on their 2-point conversion and tie the game 8-8 with just over 10 minutes to go in the third quarter. Each team would once again trade punts and fumbles until the Cougars scored their second touchdown of the game using the legs of Marcus Horton. They would convert on their 2-point conversion and make the score 16-8 with two minutes remaining in the third quarter.
The Wolverines would get the ball back and score in just one play off a huge catch and run from senior running back, Brady Smith. The Wolverines attempted another 2-point conversion but were unable to score, making the score 16-14 to start the fourth quarter.
The Cougar and Wolverine defenses held up the entire fourth quarter as both teams would trade punts. The Wolverines got the ball with just over three minutes to go in the game and had one final possession to keep their season alive. The Wolverines would move down the field and get inside the Cougar 20-yard line. They got held to fourth down and instead of kicking the field goal to potentially go up by a point, they went for it and were unable to convert, effectively ending the game and their season.
The Wolverine players were filled with emotion as their season ended. They knew the outcome could have been different if they would have had just one less fumble or one more play. The Cougars, however, will move on and face the Los Molinos Bulldogs in Los Molinos on Friday, Nov. 22, after press time.
