Sheriffs, Bikes and Backpacks in Biggs

BIGGS, CA (MPG) - The City of Biggs joined the nation-wide celebration last Tuesday, Aug. 6, inviting the public to come together with their local law enforcement.
The event location changed from Biggs Family Park to Cork Oak Park & Schohr’s Pool, which was ideal on the hot Aug. 6 evening. The pool was opened for free swimming, while others enjoyed ice cream, free hot dogs and visiting booths.
The night out was sponsored by the City of Biggs and Butte County Sheriff’s Office, with whom the city contracts for police services. Sheriff Kory Honea came out with a strong showing of his team to support their community and participate in the evening’s fun.
Biggs followed a simple system: get a stamp card and visit all the booths for a raffle ticket and a chance to win a bike or scooter at the 6:45 p.m. raffle. Booths included CAL FIRE, Butte County Sheriff’s Office, Butte County Probation, Biggs Methodist Church, to mention a few, all providing helpful information and goodies for the kids who visited each.

volunteered to pull ducks out of the Ducky Derby. Winners’ numbers were called
for a cash prize. The first winner was a young girl, who when asked by Mayor
Brian Basset what she would buy with her $5 prize money exclaimed “Candy!”
The evening’s schedule of events ended with Biggs Methodist Church raffling off 100 backpacks donated by Sun West Milling. Biggs Methodist Church made sure there were books to fill them, handing out free ones to those interested.

The park that hosted the evening’s festivities sits adjacent to the high school and the Biggs High School football teams were seen practicing for two hours during National Night Out. As their practice ended, Coach Brian Harrison led his team off the field, passing one of the Sheriff’s Helicopters at the event. The team paused for a photo and caught the attention of Sheriff Honea, who joined them in front of the helicopter for a team photo.
As the evening wound down, families settled themselves to take in a movie projected on big screen for the community to enjoy.
