Gridley CA (MPG) - CALFIRE/Butte County Fire would like to invite everybody out to our North versus South softball game at 5:30 P.M. this Friday, May 20 at Manuel Vierra Park.

We have been hosting a softball game the Friday night before Red Suspenders Day since 2003. In the past, the Gridley Fire Department has battled hard against the fine officers of the Gridley Police Department, but this year we are trying something new.

Back in 2005, a challenge was issued for a slow-pitch softball game between a handful of firemen from the northern end of Butte County and the firemen of the South County (a rough line would be a split at Highway 149). The South agreed, but much to their chagrin, they were defeated by the North, 20-17.

The next year, the South must have practiced because they came out with a 10-9 win. Currently, the North holds the trophy, but we will see if this is the year it changes hands.

This friendly competition is a good way for our local firemen to get together, get a little work out in, build on their teamwork skills and have a great time before fire season kicks off. Another side competition prior to the game (for a small entry free) will be a winner-takes-all Home Run Derby for the players.

We look forward to seeing you at Manuel Vierra Park on Friday, May 20 at 5:30 PM. Come and support your local fire departments!
