GRIDLEY, CA (MPG) - Despite being down 33 points in the first quarter, you never saw the Gridley Bulldogs Basketball Team quit in their loss to Campolindo in the first round of the Gridley Invitational Basketball Tournament. The Bulldogs fought as hard as they could against a Campolindo squad that was clearly bigger and had more depth.
The Bulldogs’ hard luck started in the first quarter when Campolindo went on a 24-0 run to start the game. Campolindo got to the foul line early and often in the first quarter, scoring 5 of its 35 first quarter points on free throws. The Bulldogs committed 7 turnovers in the first quarter alone which made the going all that much tougher for the rest of the game.
The Bulldogs offense came alive in the second quarter when sophomore Aaron Kullar scored 4 of his 7 points. Despite Kullar’s effort, Gridley was outscored 15-7 in the second quarter. Again, multiple turnovers stymied the Bulldog offense. Campolindo capitalized on the mistakes with fast breaks that led to points from dunks or easy layups.
The third quarter also started bad for the Bulldogs. The Cougars got three offensive rebounds in its first possession of the 3rd quarter leading to a 3-pointer. Another 5 turnovers from Gridley in the third quarter led to easy Cougar points. The score was 75-12 after the third quarter.
Gridley fought as hard as they could in the 4th quarter, but the effort was futile. More turnovers and getting out hustled on the offensive boards led to 16 more Cougar points in the 4th quarter.
The final score of the game was 91-17.
