GRIDLEY, CA (MPG) – Gridley High School got down to a super-week of festivities based around this year’s Homecoming Theme “Marvel”.

GHS Superheroes got spirits flying high with dress-up spirit days throughout the week, including Monday’s “Dynamic Duo Day” (dress like twins), Tuesday’s “Futuristic Day” (wear metallics), Wednesday’s “Wealthy Wednesday Day” (dress in formal attire), Thursday’s “Wear Black and Don’t Bring a Back-Pack Day” (because heroes carry the weight of the world on their backs), and “Blue and Gold Friday” (because Gridley students are real super heroes).

That evening, roles reversed in the traditional game of Football Follies, where a team of Senior girls took on a team of Junior girls in a battle of flag football. These two teams were coached by none other than the boys Varsity Football Team. Final score was 12-6, with a touchdown the last few minutes of the game securing the win for the Senior girls.

Keeping the momentum strong, GHS Leadership planned additional activities for their fellow super-students throughout the week, such as an “infinity stone scavenger hunt”, lunch-time karaoke, and a week-ending rally, before things really got exciting after school Friday, October 22nd.

Upon the final bell, students, teachers, athletes and more gathered in front of the high school for the annual Homecoming Parade. This is typically when the community gets its first look at all the hard work each grade put into their floats this year. In keeping with the super theme, “Marvel”, each float focused on a superhero or group of superheroes. Freshman debuted their “Hulk” float, while the Sophomores tingled our senses with their “Spider-Man” float. The artistic splendor continued with the Juniors glittering “Guardians of the Galaxy” float and the Seniors seeked to obliterate all with their “Thanos” (from Avengers: Infinity War) themed float.

Supported by Gridley Police Department and CALFIRE Butte Unit/Gridley Fire Station 74, the GHS Swim Team, girls Volleyball Team, girls Softball Team, GHS Cross Country Team, Varsity and Junior Varsity boys Football teams, and Leadership students paraded through town before taking their celebration to the football field later that evening, where the final float results and winning royalty would be announced. (See “A Homecoming to Marvel At” article for float and King/Queen winner results).

A Homecoming dance Saturday evening at Expo Hall put an exclamation mark on an amazing homecoming week for Gridley High.
