BIGGS, CA (MPG) -The Biggs Wolverines were looking for a win Friday night against Weed to end a two-game losing streak in Cascade Valley League play. They didn’t get it.
Instead, they got smothered by a swarming Cougar defense that racked up defensive statistics like it was a video game. The Wolverine rushing attack was stifled by a cougar defensive line that dominated the line of scrimmage. And despite some big plays through the air in the 2nd quarter, the Cougar defensive line had Biggs quarterback Riley Rutherford scrambling for his life all night. The Weed defensive players recorded 5 tackles for loss, 1 interception, and 3 fumble recoveries, two of which were returned for touchdowns in the 3rd quarter. The defensive effort led to a total of 26 points from turnovers, dooming the Wolverines. Special teams also played a role in the loss as Biggs could not convert a point after attempt. The Wolverines were also turned back on a fake punt attempt from their own 14-yard line, which led to a Weed field goal in the first quarter.
The Wolverine defense did their best to contain the Cougar offense throughout the game. Biggs held the Cougars to just 38 yards on the ground on 18 attempts. Tim Felkins of the Biggs defense came up with two interceptions in the 2nd quarter. However, Weed QB Kobe Chanthavisouk made up for the interceptions by going 15 of 21 for 206 yards and a touchdown through the air, leading the Cougars to victory.
Biggs will do its best to get off the schnide in Quincy against the Trojans next Friday night.
