Won the game 35-12 over the Cardinals

GRIDLEY, CA (MPG) - The Gridley High School varsity football squad has faced a number of challenges to start the 2021 season. Their first game scheduled for September 3, 2021 against Willows High School got changed last minute when Willows had to cancel. So, the Bulldogs traveled to Enterprise High School (Redding, CA) that evening instead. With no time to strategically prepare against the Hornets, the Bulldogs lost their season opener 34-6. This past Friday’s game, September 17, 2021, the Bulldogs hosted the visiting Cardinals of Corning High School, in another adverse game. A number of players within the program were sent home from school earlier in the week to isolate, forcing some last minute changes before game day.

The Bulldogs were led by senior quarterback, Shay Carr, through the air and on the ground. Carr got things started for the Bulldogs with a 65 yard quarterback keeper down the left sideline for the score. Carr led the ground game with 155 yards on 21 carries and one touchdown for the Bulldogs. Junior running back, Michael Ryan, finished the ground attack with 67 yards and two touchdowns. Through the air, Carr went 13-for-14 with 124 yards and two touchdown passes. Ryan led the receiving core with 108 yards on nine receptions and two touchdowns.

On the defensive side of the ball, juniors, Kareem Jones, and Michael Ryan each had eight total tackles, with help from seniors Greyson Sannar and Shay Carr with six total tackles. Juniors, Angel Castaneda and Spencer Davis each had five total tackles for the Bulldogs. Junior, Andrew Engelmann had one sack on the Cardinal quarterback for a loss of yards, and senior, Ryan Smith, recovered an onside kick in the game.

The Bulldogs went on to win the game 35-12 over the Cardinals.

Gridley will be at home the next two Friday’s, hosting the Marysville Indians (September 23, 2021) and the Live Oak Lions (October 1, 2021) for the annual Harvest Bowl. Both games start at 7:30 P.M. for the varsity teams and JV at 5:30 P.M.
