GRIDLEY, CA (MPG) - It was the perfect day to bring back recreational youth soccer to the community of Gridley through the Parks & Recreation Division. Not only had it been a full year since youth throughout Gridley and surrounding communities had an opportunity to play recreational sports, but it was a day of remembrance for September 11, 2001. Twenty years to the day, kids as young as four years old and as old as fourteen years old gathered at Gridley High School for some fun competitive soccer matches.
With Sycamore Middle School renovating their grass area where soccer games have been played in the past, the City of Gridley and Gridley Unified School District are in a contractual agreement to utilize the Gridley High School soccer fields for the duration of the season. The soccer fields are the perfect sized area to have a number of matches being played at one time. With over 400 youth from Gridley, Biggs, Richvale, Live Oak, and Oroville, field space and time are important for matches to be played in one day.
The first games kicked off around 8:00 a.m. for the 10U co-ed teams with games every hour until 2:00 p.m. where the 14U girls teams finished out the day. The 4 year old division teams this year are: the Swordfish, the Goldfish, the Dolphins, the Sharks, the Stingrays, and the Snappers. The 6U division teams this year are: the Haws, the Mallards, the Vultures, the Falcons, the Cardinals, the Flamingos, The Eagles, the Blue Jays, the Warblers, and the Sparrows. The 8U division teams this year are: the Badgers, the Tigers, the Lions, the Bears, the Panthers, the Cobras, the Bulldogs, and the Wolves. The 10U division teams this year are: the Rams, the Mustangs, the Rangers, the Jaguars, the Cruisers, and the Vipers. The boys 14U teams this year are: the Crusaders, the Vikings, the Avengers, and the Warriors. The girls 14U teams this year are: the Bobcats, the Pumas, the Cheetahs, and the Cougars.
This year the season spans from September 11, 2021 to October 8, 2021. There is still a need for referees each week so if you have interest to help out the youth in the community and make some money on the weekends, please contact Trina Leishman at (530) 846-3264 or message her on the Gridley Parks and Recreation Facebook page.
