GRIDLEY, CA (MPG) – Last week, wild animals surrounded McKinley School – they were even climbing the fences!
On closer examination, one would see that the chimpanzees, frogs and butterflies were not about to fly away, but instead were on display for proud students to show their families. It was all a part of McKinley’s First Annual Science Showcase, held Wednesday, June 2nd, in lieu of Open House.
McKinley students spent a 6-week period preparing for the Science Showcase. Each week they would rotate to a new classroom to learn about one of six animals. Throughout that week, students would dedicate themselves to the scientific study of the animal and then create an artwork depicting the animal. This continued until all classes K-2 completed their study on the following six animals: butterfly, caterpillar, turtle, duck, chimpanzee, and frog.
Student Eli Mullins, when asked about his monkey, said, “They’re not monkeys; they’re chimpanzees actually. They climb. Have no tails at all, have opposable thumbs and big toes….and when they are born, they are actually a pinkish color.”
Quite impressive! And judging by the smiles, fun for families, students, teachers, and all those involved.
