GRIDLEY, CA (MPG) - The Gridley Lions Club recently held their annual Speech Contest at their clubhouse on Washington Street. Each year a topic is selected by the 15 District Governors of the Lions Clubs of California that is of general interest to the public as a whole, and also of significance to the students themselves. The purpose of such a speech is to encourage and support development of public speaking as a critically important life skill. The students who speak will also have an opportunity to participate in a contest that will reward a total of over $103,000 in scholarships to the participants as they compete at each of the six levels.
This year Gridley High School and Biggs High School students spoke on the subject of “Distance and Online Learning, Pros and Cons”. Winning the contest and qualifying her to go to the next level, was Harjot Gakhal. Harjot will be giving her speech again at the Lions Zone Contest to be held at the Gridley Lion's Den in Gridley on Wednesday, March 24th, at 7:00 p.m. Unfortunately, because of the Covid 19 protocol, the public will not be allowed to attend without an invitation from the Gridley Lions.
Participants in the 2021 Gridley Lions speech contest included Cali Navarro from Biggs High School, and Evelyn Haro, Kayllen Barnette, and winner Harjot Gakhal from Gridley High.
