A Christmas Tree for Fish
Dec 10, 2020 12:00AM ● By By Seti LongBIGGS, CA (MPG) – Biggs 4-H is rolling out one of their socially-distanced fundraisers just in time for Christmas: The Christmas Tree Recycling & Fish Habitat Improvement project.
Biggs 4-H group has grown from a small group to 40+ members and has become incredibly active in the Biggs community. Brian Harrison, Biggs 4-H leader says that his group participated in this fundraiser last year and that the experience is “a really good thing for the kids”. Biggs 4-H members will collect Christmas trees from those who register with the group and transport them to their new underwater homes at Lake Oroville or the Thermalito Afterbay.
This 4-H project is in cooperation with the Department of Water Resources at Lake Oroville and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. The trees are submerged in the waters to become new habitats for baby fish, resulting in the growth of periphyton slime that acts as a start off to the food chain and results in more, larger fish, better fishing and a healthy lake environment. Trees must be live trees and have no tinsel, ornaments, flocking etc.
The Biggs 4-H is asking for a donation of $10-$35 for the tree pick up as the donations support their 4-H chapter’s ongoing education in agriculture, leadership, community, art and more. To register for 4-H tree pick-ups, sign-up forms will be available at Harshbarger Ace Hardware, Wheeler Ranch and Feed, Mac’s Market, the UPS Store and the Post Offices of Gridley and Biggs.
