GRIDLEY, CA (MPG) – Gridley’s Baptist Church is once again partnering with Samaritan’s Purse for Operation Christmas Child.

The Operation Christmas Child project provides shoe boxes filled with gifts and a spiritual message to children in need throughout the world. Many of the boxes reach children that have never had a gift package before and the joy they experience is beyond heartwarming. Volunteer collector Teri Davis says that for the recipients the boxes are “so precious to them. It’s the first time that they’ve ever had to call their own.” Fellow volunteer, Diane says that, “I think it is a great way to spread the love of God and also the love of people – to let them know that they are loved.”

Those interested in participating have a few options. They can  put together a box on their own – be it a shoe box or even plastic tote box, gifts can be bagged and dropped off at the Baptist Church to be placed in official Operation Christmas Child boxes, or you can build a box online. Gifts must fit inside a standard shoe box and boxes must have lids that can be opened and shut. A flat rate of $9.00 is requested for shipping and a little label attached to the boxes will designate if the gift is for a girl or boy and the age range of the child. Givers are also encouraged to include a picture of themselves/family and a note for the child. Tracking is also available so that givers can see what country their package is delivered to.

Popular items include ‘’wow” items like deflated soccer balls and a pump, dolls, stuffed animals, musical instruments and shoes. Other suggestions include school supplies, accessories like hats and jewelry and jump ropes. Candy, toothpaste, gum, used items, war related items, food, liquids, lotions and breakable items are discouraged.

The Baptist Church located at 100 Vermont Street will begin collecting items beginning Monday, November 16th until November 23rd. Collection times vary: 11/16: 4-6 pm, 11/17:2-5 pm, 11/18: 9-11 am, 11/19: 9-11 am, 11/20: 4-6 pm, 11/21: 9-11 am, 11/22: 12-2 pm, and 11/23: 9-11 am. You may also call the church at (530) 846-3122.

Davis wants to remind people that due to the shipping process, not all gifts will reach children by Christmas. Instead, gifts are delivered year-round for continued Christmas joy.
