Gridley Boys Soccer Secures Back to Back BVL League Titles

GRIDLEY, CA (MPG) - The Gridley High School boys varsity soccer team secured its second straight Butte View League championship on Thursday, February 13, 2020. With a win against Sutter High School, and an Orland High School tie against Wheatland High School, the Bulldogs moved into first place for the title. 

Since taking over the program in 2003, Gridley head coach, Jesse Barajas, has coached the Bulldogs soccer program to over 250 wins, 93 losses, and 33 draws. In his 16th season, Barajas has coached the varsity team to the Northern Section California Interscholastic Federation Division 2 championship game in 2004, 2007, and 2014. Coach Barajas coached the NSCIF Division 2 championship teams in 2005, 2006, 2009, 2014, and 2015.

With this year’s Butte View League championship title, the Bulldogs soccer program has won in 2005, 2006, 2015, 2016, 2018, and now 2019 under coach Barajas. This year’s league championship team finished 6-2-2 in league (12-5-2 overall), with 53 goals scored. Junior midfielder / forward, Freddy Anguiano, scored 10 goals on the season. Freshman midfielder / forward, Ricky Ramos, scored 8 goals on the season. Junior midfielder, Alberto Torres, scored 7 goals on the season. Senior fullback / forward, Ivan Escalante, scored 6 goals on the season. Sophomore fullback / midfielder, Kevin Martinez, scored 5 goals on the season. Fifteen different Bulldogs put the ball into the back of the net this season.

Gridley secured a bye in the first round of the NSCIF Division 2 playoffs as the number four seed. The Bulldogs will host a home game on Thursday, February, 20, 2020, against the winner of Orland High School and Sutter High School. The game starts at 3:00PM at the Gridley High School soccer field.
