BIGGS, CA (MPG) - Biggs High School boys varsity basketball team has been playing some great basketball to open league. On January 15, 2020, the team opened up away against Esparto, taking a 74-57 victory. On January 17th, the Wolverines hosted the Portola Tigers in a close 60-53 victory. The following week on January 22nd, the Wolverines hit the court again at Maxwell High School to face the Panthers. The Wolverines cruised to a 68-42 victory. Two days later on January 24th, Biggs traveled to CORE Butte High School to claim a 56-36 victory.

One component to the Wolverines success has been the addition of sophomore, Talon Gramps, the younger brother of junior, Shavon Gramps-green. The energy in the offense is at an all-time high, and Gramps can be a huge component on offense and defense. The starting five bring a new level of strength, energy, and chemistry.

In their latest game against league rival, Quincy High School, the Wolverines faced their first loss of league play in an uncharacteristic performance by the Wolverines. The Wolverines trailed 14-16 after the first quarter with back and forth stellar competition from both teams. Gramps led the Wolverine offense with six points in the first quarter. Another close battle in the second quarter had the Wolverines still trailing by two points at halftime, 32-30.

In the third quarter, senior Blake McLean got the hot hand for the Wolverines, scoring 17 of the 18 points in the quarter. McLean hit three 3-point shots and added four field goals to keep pace with the Trojans. At the end of the third quarter, the Wolverines trailed 48-53.

The fourth quarter is when things really fell apart for the Wolverines and were outscored 25-5. The Wolverines fell by a final score of 78-53. McLean finished the night leading the team in scoring with 23 points. Gramps scored 10 points with brother Shavon scoring 6 points. Gregg Slusser added 4 points. Xavier Sanchez and Daniel Santillan each scored 3 points. Cali Navarro and Joe Weiss each scored 2 points.

With their first loss of league, the Wolverines sit in second place in the Mountain Valley League, 4-1 (8-11 overall).
