BIGGS, CA (MPG) - It was a special day last Saturday at Wheeler Ranch and Feed in Biggs. Not only did it mark their 20th anniversary, but the transfer of the family business from one generation to the next.
The Wheelers are a tight-knit group. Matriarch Kari Wheeler, who originally started the business with her husband Doug in ‘99, did so in order to be home with her family. The store, barn facilities and arena are located on the homestead property and allowed her to work with something she loved, animals, while being with those she loved. Growing up watching her mother, Kayla Wheeler-Dunlap says, “I always came straight here from school and helped mom.” She had a feeling that she was destined to inherit the business.
After obtaining her Bachelor in Science degree at Sac State University and working at the Farm Bureau in Oroville, Kayla made the decision to return to Wheelers Ranch and Feed. She began learning the ropes of the family business and preparing to take over the role of management. She says, “I have always known I was going to want this… I’ve always known this is home.”
At the official change of ownership and ribbon-cutting celebration put on by the Gridley Area Chamber of Commerce Saturday, Kari handed Kayla the reigns to the family business. The whole Wheeler clan turned out to support the hand-over, along with loyal customers and friends. Kari thanked both the Chamber of Commerce for their continued support, current feed reps and Bob Baylor, the Nutrena feed rep that took a chance on the Wheelers and helped get them started.
From here on out, Kayla will be handling all the ordering, day-to-day business and events, including some exciting new additions. In cooperation with her brother, Jake Wheeler, the pair intends to get the arena back up and running. He jokes of his sister, “She is the brains behind the operation, I’m the Braun.” They are hoping to reinvigorate the Friday night roping events and bring the arena back to life.
As for the transition of ownership, Kari said that “It’s bitter-sweet but it’s more exciting than anything to see the legacy continue for the family. It’s great that generations can move on and take over!” Kari said, “I will still be here to help.” Now that Kayla has taken over the feed store, Kari can focus on her new venture, Wheeler Ranch and Real Estate.
After the red ribbon was cut, guests enjoyed a customer appreciation lunch, cotton candy and popcorn, a raffle for pet food and supplies, bounce house and music provided by Emma & Will. “Thank you for 20 years,” the Wheelers said, “We promise 20 more!”
